Short answer: yes. You can legally sell a vehicle in New Zealand without a current WOF or registration. Here's exactly how.
There's a common myth that a car needs a current Warrant of Fitness and registration to be sold. It doesn't. What you can't do is drive an unregistered or un-WOF'd vehicle on public roads. Selling it is perfectly legal — and when you sell to a wrecker who tows the car away, it never needs to be driven at all.
Most cars people want to get rid of have exactly this problem: the rego lapsed, the WOF failed, or the car won't start. Paying for a WOF and rego just to sell a car you're scrapping makes no sense. Selling it as-is to a wrecker avoids all of that — we collect it on a truck, so its road-legal status is irrelevant.
Once you sell, the vehicle should be taken out of your name so you're not liable for it. You can do this online through NZTA, but when you sell to us we complete the change-of-ownership notification as part of the pickup, so there's nothing left for you to chase.
Sell an un-WOF'd, unregistered or dead car to a wrecker and the whole thing is simple: get a quote, agree a price, and we tow it away free and sort the paperwork. Get a free quote for your vehicle anywhere in the Ashburton District.
You don't need to cancel it — but you should notify the change of ownership so the car is out of your name. We handle that notification for you when we collect the vehicle.
You may be able to apply to NZTA for a refund on remaining registration when a vehicle is sold or scrapped. It's worth checking directly with Waka Kotahi.
Tell us about your vehicle and we'll come back fast with a free, no-obligation cash offer — then tow it away for free, anywhere in Mid Canterbury.
